Himanta Biswa Sarma has faced several serious allegations over the years, including claims of alleged links to the separatist outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), which the organisation itself has raised on multiple occasions. In 1991, two cases were reportedly registered against him under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA). He was accused of allegedly extorting ₹10 lakh in ULFA’s name, while reports at the time claimed that a pistol and 25 bullets were recovered from his residence. He reportedly spent around 15 days in custody. However, the case diaries subsequently went missing, and the Gauhati High Court eventually acquitted him. Sarma’s name also surfaced in connection with the murder of Congress leader Manabendra Sharma, but he was acquitted in that case as well. In the Saradha chit fund scam, prime accused Sudipta Sen alleged in a letter to the CBI that Sarma had received ₹3 crore in bribes. His name has also been linked to controversies surrounding the Louis Berger bribery case, PPE kit procurement during the COVID-19 pandemic, and a flyover-related controversy. Notably, several of these allegations date back to the period when Sarma was associated with the Congress party or the All Assam Students’ Union. The BJP, which had previously demanded investigations into some of these matters, later welcomed him into its ranks. He subsequently emerged as one of the party’s most influential leaders in the North-East. However, it is important to distinguish allegations from proven wrongdoing. Sarma has been acquitted in the cases mentioned above, and allegations or claims of bribery do not, by themselves, establish guilt.
