On the birth anniversary of Sam Manekshaw, here’s the story behind one of his most iconic replies 🇮🇳 “I am always ready, sweetie.” A line that sounds casual… almost playful. But behind it stood one of the sharpest military minds India has ever seen. The year was 1971. Tensions between India and Pakistan were at their peak as the crisis in East Pakistan intensified, leading up to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was under immense pressure. Refugees were pouring into India, the humanitarian crisis was growing, and the nation demanded action. In one crucial meeting, she turned to the Chief of Army Staff, Sam Manekshaw, and asked: “Are you ready to go to war?” Manekshaw, known for his wit and fearless clarity, responded with calm confidence: “I am always ready, sweetie.” But what made him extraordinary wasn’t just confidence—it was honesty. He didn’t rush into war. Right after that statement, he laid out the ground reality with absolute clarity: The Indian Army was not fully prepared for an immediate offensive The monsoon season would make movement and operations extremely difficult Troops, equipment, and strategy needed time to align for a decisive victory He made it clear: “If you want war now, I guarantee defeat. If you give me time, I guarantee victory.” That moment defined true leadership. He had the courage to stand firm—even in front of the Prime Minister—because he wasn’t chasing war… he was preparing to win it. Indira Gandhi trusted him. Months later, when the time was right, India went to war. The result? A swift, decisive victory. Pakistan was split into two, and Bangladesh was born. That one line— “I am always ready” —was never about impulse. It was about preparedness, timing, and the confidence of a man who knew exactly when to strike. That’s what made Sam Bahadur not just a soldier… but a legend. www.navjivanfoundation.org
