Himanta Biswa Sarma has faced a number of serious allegations over the years. Notably, claims about his alleged links with the separatist group United Liberation Front of Asom have been made by ULFA itself on multiple occasions. In 1991, two cases were registered against him under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, a law used for terrorism-related offenses. He was allegedly caught extorting ₹10 lakh in ULFA’s name, and reports at the time claimed that a pistol and 25 bullets were recovered from his residence. He remained in custody for around 15 days. However, the case diaries later went missing, and the Gauhati High Court eventually acquitted him. His name also surfaced in the murder case of Congress leader Manabendra Sharma, though he was acquitted in that case as well. In the Saradha chit fund scam, key accused Sudipta Sen alleged in a letter to the CBI that Sarma received ₹3 crore in bribes. Additionally, his name has been linked at various times to controversies such as the Louis Berger scam, PPE kits procurement issues, and a flyover-related case. Many of these allegations date back to periods when he was part of the Congress party or associated with All Assam Students’ Union. Interestingly, the Bharatiya Janata Party, which had earlier called for investigations into some of these matters, later inducted him into the party, where he went on to become a key political figure in the North-East. It is important to note that, despite these allegations, Himanta Biswa Sarma has not been convicted in any of these cases to date www.navjivanfoundation.org
