New Global Survey Shows Indians Place Greater Trust in Putin Than Trump A new international survey by the Pew Research Center has revealed that Indians have greater confidence in Russian President Vladimir Putin than in U.S. President Donald Trump when it comes to handling world affairs. The findings stand out because, unlike many Western countries where Putin’s ratings remain low, India is among the few nations where he continues to receive comparatively higher public support. The survey found that 51 percent of Indian respondents expressed confidence in Putin, while 39 percent said they trusted Trump’s leadership on global issues. It also showed that confidence in Trump has declined from the previous year, even as Putin’s image among Indian respondents has remained relatively stable. Analysts say the results reflect India’s decades-old strategic partnership with Russia. From defence cooperation and nuclear energy projects to discounted crude oil imports after the Ukraine conflict, Russia has remained one of India’s closest geopolitical partners. These longstanding ties are believed to have shaped public opinion in favour of Putin despite growing global criticism of Moscow. The survey has triggered widespread discussion on social media. While many users said the findings mirror India’s independent foreign policy and historical friendship with Russia, others argued that global leaders should be judged primarily on their current actions rather than past diplomatic ties. Some also noted that India continues to maintain close relations with both Washington and Moscow, making public opinion more balanced than in many other countries. The report comes at a time when global confidence in Donald Trump has fallen sharply. Across the 36 countries covered by the survey, only a median of 23 percent of respondents expressed confidence in Trump’s handling of world affairs, placing him behind several other international leaders, including Putin. The findings once again underline India’s distinct geopolitical outlook, where strategic interests and long-standing partnerships continue to influence public perception www.navjivanfoundation.org
