India’s first hydroelectric power station was commissioned in 1897 at Sidrapong in Darjeeling, West Bengal, during British India. This historic hydropower plant generated 130 kilowatts of electricity, lighting up Darjeeling town for the first time. Using mountain streams to rotate turbines and generators, Sidrapong marked the beginning of India’s electrical revolution and renewable energy journey.
